Dear Widow of Zarephath

Dear Widow of Zarephath,

I certainly had to take in why God had to use you to feed Elijah. You, being that you are a widow, with a little child and with not much food in your pantry. You didn’t have much provision stored: just a handful of flour and a little jar of oil. To accompany your misery, you had little hope to live. You were on your way to cook your meal then die. God could have used someone else. Someone who could afford to feed him. In fact, prior to Elijah coming to your home, God used a raven to bring him bread and meat in the morning and in the evening. God didn’t need to use you. He has tons of avenues to work mysteriously. But YOU needed God to use you.

I heard that shortly after you decided to go ahead and obey God’s command to feed Elijah, your son died. I would be writing you a whole different letter if you didn’t obey God. This letter would have been a letter of comfort to console you. But I didn’t have to. Why? Because the person you obeyed to feed was the person God used to revive your son. What would have happened if you said no to Elijah and no to God?

Dear Modern Day Widow of Zarephath,
Perhaps you aren’t a widow per se. But you have a shortage, a lack, a disability, an issue and God is asking you to sacrificially do something. You know, He sure has a way of asking us to do something that He can find someone else do it. The things He asks are always close to impossible, a hard task to do. But He wants you to do it so that He can stretch you, whether it may be to stretch your faith, stretch your endurance or expand your knowledge of Him. I’m not sure what that “Oh no God, I can’t.” is, but there is provision in your obedience. If He’s asking you do something, it will be beneficial to you at the end. If He is asking you to give away something, He has a double blessing on route to you. Do it!
